MARK WILHELMS, FOUNDER

Mark Wilhelms

An entrepreneur who cut his teeth in the mid 90’s tech boom, Mark is an accomplished Digital Marketing, Web Development Social Media professional who has run a successful technology firm in Chicago for over 18 years. He has more than 30 years experience in Media, Broadcast, Agency and Brand management and has led the development of more than 3,000 digital projects for some of the nation’s best known corporations .

He is a professional Jazz pianist, Fly fisherman and a horse lover. As a “city slicker” he found himself on Cattle drives out west and fly fishing pack trips across the continental divide. This love for the west led him to become partners in a locally pastured, grass-fed beef cattle ranch in western, Illinois. In January of this year, he founded Red Meat Market to build a online social community of local meat providers and meat lovers. In just four months, Red Meat Market has been widely accepted in locavore circles as the destination for the Midwest local meat movement as membership and adoption continues to grow. Red Meat Market has been voted as one of Chicago’s top 70 new Tech Starts, finals in this year’s Chicago’s innovation awards and has appeared on multiple TV shows and articles but last but not least honored to have help champion an outdoor Red Meat Market in honor and celebration of Food Day 2012 with the City of Chicago at Chicago’s Daley Plaza.

Mark Wilhelms Horse Mark will continue to build Red Meat Market in other markets to drive the movement against “Big Meat” and empower change through technology and events that educates and activates the “Local Meat System.” A system that is better for the environment, kinder to the animals and benefits the future health and welfare of the population.

BARTLETT DURAND, CO-FOUNDER

Martial Artist, Yogi, Artisan, Local Foods Advocate; nickname "The Zen Butcher“

Bartlett Durant

Nicknamed “the Zen butcher,” Bartlett is a true renaissance man, a lawyer, a yogi, a martial arts black belt and a sustainable foods entrepreneur with an evangelical zeal for the farm to table movement. He owns Black Earth Meats near Madison, Wis., a processing facility and wholesaler of locally produced, grass fed and organic meats from more than 100 local providers, and is marketing manager for Otter Creek Organic Farm, which was honored as the Organic Farm of the Year in 2008. Bartlett is one of the founders of Slow Money Wisconsin and is the President of Seeding Slow Money, a not-for-profit entity tasked with raising charitable funds to support the Slow Money mission through education, research, and grants to local food related businesses. Additionally, Bartlett is a business consultant and legal advisor working with clients across the country.

Bartlett is a powerful speaker and evangelist for Local, Sustainable and All-Natural Farm to Table movement. He has been one of the true leaders in the Locavore movement in the midwest and drives Red Meat Markets overall values of delivering quality Local, Sustainable, All-Natural Meat that is better for the environment, the animals and the health of the population.

Bartlett’s wife Leilani is the director of research for Midwestern Bio-Ag, the premier consulting/fertilizer company for biological farming in the nation, if not the world. She is an author of Advancing Biological Farming with her father Gary Zimmer, and is an instructor and lecturer on the principles of biological farming with demand for her services coming from throughout the world. Bartlett and Leilani have two young children, and both already know the answer to the seemingly simple question “who grew this?”

For Bartlett, Red Meat Market represents the ideal mechanism to grow the community of sustainable foods. By working together, the three key areas necessary for food -- production, processing/delivery, consumption -- become more resilient, transparent, and healthier. The website empowers the consumer to immediately DEMAND the quality of food they want, not through an intermediary (retailer or chef) but directly. The ultimate goal is to create a true community of consumers who will patronize those restaurants and retailers who support sustainable meats, and who will have the opportunity to invest in the regional food system directly. The power of this idea cannot be overstated.
